W Scott: "Waverley"

Sir Walter Scott's "WAVERLEY", published by Franklin Library in leather with gilt edges!

This is a Limited Edition, and very rare, of "Waverley" by Sir Walter Scott, with illustrations by Godefroy Durand, published exclusively for subscribers to The Franklin Library collection in 1981.

The book is leather bound with decorative gold edges on both
the cover and the spine, along with gold edges on the pages,
and also contains decorative paper inside both covers, along
with a silk page marker.

"Waverley" is an historical novel by sir Walter Scott (1771–
1832).
Published anonymously in 1814 as Scott's first venture
into prose fiction, it is often regarded as the first historical
novel in the western tradition.
The book became so popular that Scott's later novels were advertised as being "by the author of Waverley". His series of works on similar themes written during the same period have become collectively known as the "Waverley Novels".
Scott opened the history, topography and culture of Scotland for the Englishmen, and other Europeans and for the Americans with his novels, and is still regarded as the foremost Scottish author in prose, as Robert Burns is considered in poetry.
His popularity reflects in his peerage, as he was knighted baronet, and that his home, Abbotsford, still is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Scotland.
This work of Scott, "Waverly", may nowadays be less known, as his "Ivanhoe" dominates in general knowledge concerning works by Scott.
It's lovely illustrated by the French artist Godefroy Durand.
